Start with the frame. Measure the steel, look at how the joints are welded and bolted, and push the assembled unit to feel whether it rocks. Then read the nameplates: motor power, speed, gearbox ratio and the protection class — the plate should match what the quotation promised. Open the control cabinet next. Neat DIN rail, labelled terminals, a real thermal relay and a separate breaker for each motor are the difference between a machine that survives a power spike and one that does not. Ask to see the die and rollers unmounted, so you can judge the hole finish and the roller surface yourself.
The most useful step is a running test on your material. Bring two or three sacks of your own maize, cassava or grass meal. Watch the feed rate, listen to the mill under load, check the pellet surface and break one open to see how well the meal bonded. Moisture and fibre vary by country, and a supplier who will not run your sample is telling you something too.
Finally, walk to the parts shelf. Ask how many dies, hammers and screens are in stock, how fast they ship and who answers the phone at harvest season.
