Round bale silage — baleage — is the simplest version for a small farm. Grass is cut before it heads out, while sugar levels are high, wilted a few hours, then baled and wrapped in film in one pass. Weiwei's Model 50 round silage baler does both jobs: 45-60 bales an hour, 35-85 kg per bale, 550 × 520 mm, with a 5.5 kW baling motor and 0.55 kW wrapping motor — or an 18 HP diesel engine where there is no power line.
What happens inside the film is the point. The grass uses up the oxygen, then sugars ferment into lactic acid; pH drops to about 4 and moulds stop. Protein, sugars and carotene are held instead of burned away — which is why a January bale can beat hay cut from the same field. After 40-60 days it keeps for months at the field edge or under a shed; open one bale at a time and feed it within days.
For a farm that chops its own forage, the baler is the last step before winter: chop to 2-3 cm, bale, wrap, stack.
