The lever beside the feed hopper has three positions. In the SHORT position, the machine cuts at 0.5-0.8 cm — the length silage needs to pack without air pockets. In the LONG position, the cut opens up to 1.2-1.5 cm — coarse enough for cattle and sheep to ruminate on. The middle, EMPTY position disengages the feed rollers, which is where the lever sits when the machine starts up, when a blockage needs clearing, or when the grain-crushing hopper is in use. Moving the lever simply changes the gear train that drives the feed rollers: the blades always spin at the same speed, but the rollers feed the stalks slower or faster, and slower feeding means a shorter cut.
The "K" in the machine's job list is kneading. Behind the blades, paired rubbing edges crush and bruise each piece of stalk, turning stiff straw into soft, silk-like fiber that cattle and sheep eat readily — including tough materials like corn stalk, peanut vine and dry grass that animals otherwise waste. The result from the SHORT position is ideal for total mixed ration; the LONG position suits bale wrapping and daily roughage feeding.
