A conditioner changes what happens before the die. It is a short, jacketed chamber where the mash meets steam for about 30 to 120 seconds at 70 to 90 °C. In that window the starch gelatinises — raw starch at roughly 20 % rising to 35–45 % — protein softens and binds, and the mash turns plastic. Forming rates climb above 95 % and fines fall below 5 %. The same heat, above 85 °C, knocks down Salmonella and other pathogens and breaks down anti-nutritional factors such as the trypsin inhibitor in soybean meal.
Steam used to mean a ring-die plant and a boiler. Weiwei now offers a conditioner as an optional add-on on its flat die pellet mills: a jacketed conditioning chamber fitted between the feeder and the die, connected to a small steam supply, or to controlled water injection where steam is not practical. Because the mash enters warm and soft, the main motor draws 10–15 % less current, die and roller life stretches by 30–50 %, and energy use drops by 20–30 % — the figures that decide whether a small mill pays for itself.
It matters most where pellet quality is the product: poultry and pig feed that must not crumble, and aquafeed that has to hold together in water.
