Weiwei Machinery Pellet Mill Die Selection Guide: 3–4 mm for Chickens and Ducks, 6–8 mm for Cattle and Sheep, and Why Chicks Need a Fine Grinder
Update:2026-09-21 18:39:01    Views:
The die — the perforated disc or ring at the heart of every pellet mill — decides the diameter of the pellets that come out. Pick the wrong hole size and animals either refuse the feed or waste it; pick the right one and intake, digestion and daily gain all improve. As a quick rule from Weiwei Machinery's feed team: adult chickens and ducks do best on 3–4 mm pellets, while cattle and sheep are fed on larger 6–8 mm pellets. The hole size is simply changed by swapping the die, so one pellet mill can serve several species across a farm or feed workshop just by changing the plate.
The difference comes down to how each animal eats and digests. Chickens and ducks peck quickly and have small gizzards, so 3–4 mm pellets are easy to pick up, swallow and grind — big enough to avoid excess flour and dust, small enough not to be rejected. Cattle and sheep are ruminants that take in bulk and chew the cud, so 6–8 mm pellets match their slower, larger intake and stay firm in the trough without breaking into fine waste. Matching the die to the animal is the cheapest adjustment a feed producer can make, and it is one of the first things Weiwei's export team asks about when quoting a pellet line.

There is one clear exception: day-old chicks and ducklings. Their crops and gizzards are still tiny, and they need feed particles around 1.5 mm — far finer than any standard pellet die produces, and too delicate to survive as whole pellets. The practical setup is to pair the pellet mill with a fine crusher or hammer mill that grinds the raw grain and meal down to about 1.5 mm first, then either press it through the smallest die available and crumble the pellets, or simply feed the fine mash as-is. Weiwei Machinery supplies matching grinders and pellet mills so a single line can take chicks from starter feed all the way to adult 3–4 mm or 6–8 mm pellets.
