The manual mulch film layer replaces that crew with one person. The machine is 12 kg, 100 cm long and 35 cm high, and it lays film in three working widths — 1 m, 1.2 m and 2 m — with a working height of 20 cm of soil cover on the edges. The frame is light enough for one operator to carry between plots and to turn at the end of a bed without lifting the film out of the ground.
The film roll sits on a steel axle between two uprights. Two angled discs at the rear cut a shallow furrow and fold soil over each edge of the film as it unrolls, so the film is tensioned by the ground itself rather than by a person pulling. The two ground wheels are driven through a differential, which is what makes the machine practical: on a normal axle, turning at the headland drags one wheel and pulls the film sideways out of the soil. With the differential, the wheels can run at different speeds, the frame pivots on the spot, and the laid film stays where it was pressed.
A hand-release device lets the operator drop the frame and step away instead of holding the load while the film is repositioned — the same detail that matters when one person is working alone on a slope. The machine works both on raised ridges and on flat fields, which covers the two bed systems most vegetable, strawberry, tobacco and peanut growers use.
