Shaving Depth, Knife Projection and the Screen Under the Disc: Setting Up an MBJ-600 Shaving Machine — Weiwei Machinery
Update:2026-11-06 11:10:54    Views:
A layer house does not buy shavings once. It buys them every flock, and pays for the bag, the pallet and the truck as well as the wood. The same is true of a mushroom yard buying substrate or a stable buying bedding. Above a few tonnes a month the arithmetic changes: the cost stops being the price of shavings and becomes the price of raw wood plus the labour of running a machine.
The MBJ-600 is built around three adjustments, and every complaint about shavings quality traces back to one of them. The first is knife projection — how far each blade stands proud of the disc. This sets shaving thickness, and it is the setting most operators never touch after commissioning. Thin shavings drain well and pack light; thick ones cushion better but hold moisture. The second is the screen under the cutting disc, which decides what leaves the machine and what is re-cut. The third is feed rate: the square vertical hopper will swallow a block faster than the disc can cut it cleanly, and forcing it produces crushed fibre instead of a curl.
The geometry is deliberately simple. A square feed opening on top takes blocks, slab offcuts and branch sections straight down into the disc; the disc carries the knives on a heavy hub with a red-painted bearing housing at its centre; a guarded belt drive links the disc shaft to a motor on its own adjustable sub-frame, so belt tension is set without shimming the whole machine. The assembly sits on a welded channel base that bolts to a concrete pad or loads onto a truck as one piece. Nothing in that chain needs a specialist to service, which matters where the nearest fitter is two hours away.
Material matters less than people expect. Anything above roughly 10 mm in diameter will cut — pallet offcuts, slab wood, pruned branches, furniture shop scraps. Dry softwood gives a pale, springy curl that sells as premium bedding; green hardwood gives a heavier, darker shaving that suits mushroom substrate or compost but will not command a bedding price. Wet material is the one input that causes real trouble: it blinds the screen, the disc rubs instead of cutting, and the shavings come out as pulp.
Where the machine earns its place is at the end of a small sawmill or pallet repair shop, where offcuts currently go into a skip. Running them through a shaver turns a disposal cost into a product that poultry farms, stables and mushroom growers buy by the bag.
Zhengzhou Weiwei Machinery has been building wood processing and biomass equipment since 1980, with CE and ISO 9001 certification. Send us your raw material, target shaving size and monthly volume, and we will tell you which model fits — including the cases where a smaller machine and two shifts beat a bigger one.
