A coconut is a packaging problem that arrives with the product. The nut is eaten or pressed, and what is left is a shell that does not crush, does not rot quickly and does not stack. In a copra or coconut-milk operation the shells pile up behind the shed, and the old trunks left after replanting are a second pile in front of it.
Hammer mills are the usual first attempt and the usual disappointment. A shell is convex and hard on the outside and fibrous inside; on a hammer mill it rattles around the chamber, half of it never meets a hammer face, and the screen blinds over with the fibrous fraction. Trunks are worse still, because the outer wood is dense and the core is soft, so the mill either bogs down or throws the piece back at the operator.
A disc chipper handles the geometry differently. The material is drawn into a rotating disc and cut across the grain by blades mounted on the face of it, producing a chip of controlled length instead of a powder of uncertain size. Hard shell, soft trunk and everything in between come out as chips, and chips are what a furnace, a gasifier or a briquette line actually wants as feed.
The MPJ-600 is the middle of our chipper range: an 18.5 kW three-phase motor on a 1500 × 570 × 1050 mm frame, 380 kg, 1500–2500 kg/h. It sits on a welded base that can be bolted down in a shed or loaded onto a truck for a site job. Where there is no three-phase supply the smaller MPJ-420 runs an 11 kW motor at 800–1500 kg/h, and for plantation-scale clearing the MPJ-1200 is diesel driven at 9.5–11 t/h.
For coconut work specifically, two points matter. Dry shells chip cleaner than fresh ones, so shells that have sat in the sun for a week give a more even product and put less load on the motor. And the chips are worth more if they are consistent: a boiler will take a mixed chip, but a briquette press or a retail bag of smoking chips will not, so the blade gap wants setting once and checking weekly rather than adjusting by feel.
