A Stump Is 60% Root Ball and Almost No Freight Value: What a Fixed Stump Crusher Changes on Site — Weiwei Machinery
Update:2026-11-06 11:16:34    Views:
Every clearing job ends with the same argument: what to do with the stumps. Digging them out is easy. Loading them is not — a stump is heavy, wet with soil, and nobody wants it. The cheap options have been to burn them, now banned in most markets, or to pay a hauler to landfill a material that charges by weight.
A stump crusher changes the material rather than the problem. The stump goes in whole, comes out as chip, and drops in volume by something like four to one. That moves it out of the "waste" column: the chip can be spread back over the cleared ground as mulch, sold as biomass fuel, or fed into a briquette line. On an orchard replant it can be left in the inter-row instead of being trucked out, which saves the haul and keeps the organic matter on the block.
The machine is deliberately blunt in design. A wide conical hopper at the top takes a root ball with the soil still on it — no pre-cutting, no splitting, no chainsaw work at the stump. Below the hopper, a horizontal disc carries swinging flail hammers and chains on a chain ring; that is what does the breaking, and it is the part that has to survive rock, wire and grit. The disc runs off a guarded belt from an electric motor mounted alongside, and crushed material leaves through a discharge at the base. The whole unit sits on a fabricated steel base sized to be lifted onto a low-bed in one piece.
Two things decide whether the machine suits a site. The first is what is mixed in with the stump. Root balls carry soil, and soil is abrasive; a machine fed clean stumps will last far longer than one fed stumps with half the field attached. Knocking off the worst of the soil is not optional maintenance, it is the difference between flails lasting a season or a month. The second is the downstream use. Chip for a boiler wants a defined maximum size; chip for mulch tolerates more oversize. That, not the motor rating, should set the machine size.
A machine like this pays back on a contract basis: a contractor moving between orchards, road jobs and municipal parks charges by the stump instead of by the hour spent hauling. The fixed unit shown here suits a yard where stumps are stockpiled and processed in batches, with a loader doing the feeding.
Zhengzhou Weiwei Machinery has manufactured wood processing and biomass equipment since 1980, holds CE and ISO 9001 certification, and ships across Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and South America. Tell us the stump diameter you handle, whether the ground is stony, and what you intend to do with the chip, and we will point you at the right configuration instead of the biggest one.
