How a Rice Mill Turns Paddy into Table Rice: 5 Things to Check Before Buying One for Your Farm
Update:2026-09-16 17:41:10    Views:
For millions of smallholder farms across Africa and Southeast Asia, the rice harvest is only half the job — turning paddy into clean, edible white rice is the other half. A rice mill machine does that in a single pass: paddy goes in the hopper, and out come brown-white rice, husks and bran, separated. But not every rice milling machine handles the grain gently, and a poor machine shows up immediately in the form of broken rice. Here is how a rice mill actually works, and the five checks worth making before you buy one.
Inside the machine, paddy is fed from the hopper into a milling chamber where a rotating roller rubs the grain against a screen and against itself, stripping off the husk and the outer bran layers. An airflow then carries the light husk and bran out of the chamber, and in a well-configured setup they are collected in a cyclone at the side — like the one shown in the photo — instead of blowing dust around the workshop. The polishing degree can be adjusted: run the grain through more gently for higher output, or longer for whiter rice. Collected rice bran is not waste, either — it is a valuable ingredient for pig and poultry feed, which matters a lot on mixed farms.
Before buying, check five things. First, capacity: match the machine to your harvest and your village's throughput, not to the biggest number on a brochure. Second, broken rice rate: this is set mainly by roller condition, grain moisture and milling time — ask the supplier how the roller and screen are adjusted. Third, bran collection: a mill with a cyclone keeps the workshop clean and gives you sellable bran. Fourth, power: smaller models such as the Weiwei 40-type rice mill run on a 2.2–3 kW motor, and diesel-engine versions are available where the grid is unreliable. Fifth, spare parts: rollers and screens are wear parts, so confirm the manufacturer keeps them in stock for years, not months.
