An elevator works like a ladder leaning against a wall: the shorter the ladder, the steeper it must lean to reach the same height. A machine forced into a steep inclination struggles with powder more than with anything else. Fine materials such as crushed maize flour, bran or ground meal are light and flow badly; on a steep slope they tumble back down inside the tube instead of being carried up, so the machine above is starved, the intake boot fills up and blocks, and the motor works harder for less output. A longer elevator covers the same height on a much gentler slope — every flight of the screw carries a full share upward, and the powder moves steadily instead of sliding back.
